An Investment in Youth Future

Palestinians living in Gaza today continue to face prolonged blockade and repeated wars and prolonged occupation causing abject poverty, deprivation and high unemployability. Due to that, 1000s of poor and disadvantaged Palestinian families cannot cover the annual tuition fees of their sons and daughters. About 8,000 out of about 16,000 undergraduate youths currently enrolled at IUG are badly seeking assistance to continue their college education and become well prepared for better future and better life.

The Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) has been trying its best to invest in female and male youths' capabilities and to facilitate full access to higher education for needy youths. However, in these hard conditions in Gaza and the rapidly increasing numbers of needy families, IUG needs more support from our donors community.

The Need is Real, The Time is Now

Among the serious problems facing youths and their families in Gaza is the rising rates of poverty (39%)[1] where “About 410,000 families are living under the abject poverty line in Gaza and almost 80% of Palestinians in Gaza depend on humanitarian assistance for survival, with no means to access education, health, clothing and shelter.”[2] Moreover, if the family has a working breadwinner, his/her average monthly wage in Gaza is “$174” as reported by the UNDP.[3]

Additionally, the average family members in Gaza is about 6 children which adds a further heavy psycho-socioeconomic stress on these youths and their poor families who cannot pay the tuition fees of 2-3 brothers and/or sisters enrolled in one higher education institutions at the same period of study.

IUG aims at supporting and empowering poor and disadvantaged male and female young undergraduate students to complete their higher education and become professionals in different fields: medicine, nursing, education, engineering, IT, science, Shari’a and law, Islamic studies, arts, business and health sciences, so they will be able to build a better future for themselves and their families.
